Green Party of Ontario outreach guide

The following guide was provided by the Green Party of Ontario to help organizers outreach to voters and build an identified supporters list that will help increase future membership.

The focus of an election campaign at the riding level should be to Identify (ID) and Get-out-the-Vote (GOTV). This is accomplished through 7 simple steps:

1. Download your poll-by-poll voting history from electionsontario.on.ca or elections.ca:
Provincial (i.e. Ontario):
http://www.electionsontario.on.ca/results/index.jsp?nocache=true
… the 2007 election and open the Excel zip file.
Federal:
http://www.elections.ca/scripts/resval/ovr_39ge.asp?prov=&lang=e
… Input your province and EDA … select poll by poll format … then save the spreadsheet and sort the Green Party column in descending order.

2. Set a target for number of Green Party Supporters to be ID’d.
You should be able to ID 2 to 5 supporters for every volunteer hour available to your campaign … i.e. 10 to 15 contacts per hour x approx 15-35% support in our best polls

3. Call your existing ID’d supporters list to recruit volunteers for:
    a) A candidate’s canvass – set a goal of XX signs per week on main streets
    b) A telephone canvass – set a goal of YY phone calls per week
    c) A door-to-door canvass – set a goal of knocking on ZZ doors per week

4. Create your Canvass Lists
Contact Craig Cantin for training on the GRIMES (Green Information Management System).  Add phone numbers where required by entering a street name without a number into http://findaperson.canada-411.ca/reverse_address

5. Ask every voter if they are a Green party supporter.
Develop a standard campaign script for outreach efforts to maintain consistency.

6. Call every ID’d supporter and remind them to vote (GOTV).
Again, use a standard campaign script for outreach efforts.

7. Keep building your list!
In the long term your ID’d supporters list becomes the basis for:
* Growing your membership
* Developing your donor base
* Recruiting volunteers, CA/EDA executives and candidates
